But in practice, people often prefer formats defined by, and made up of, design/development mistakes. In theory, Standard, being the constructed format with the most design and development should be the "best" format and the most desirable. An interesting thought at the least.Īs for the latter part of your post, the way Standard works is indeed quite odd. The nominal price is the same, but the real value within is diminished. There's an argument to be made that the debasing of the regular booster in favor of premium variants could perhaps be WotC's response to inflation. Buying has never been financially sound, but now it's akin to lighting money on fire with how stratified the secondary market has become. Project Booster Fun, mostly through Collector's Boosters, has cratered the value within WotC's core product (Draft Boosters), making resale less relevant. But this is increasingly difficult for average players. Magic's biggest economic pull over other entertainment used to be the resale factor, that it was possible to recoup some of the costs of play through the secondary market. Players are likely to cut back or take their money somewhere other than the Magic ecosystem and get the same value. Drafts cost $19 instead of $12? There's sure to be fewer people wiling to buy in (see Masters set drafts firing less often than Standard ones). If Magic costs go up significantly, people can go to hundreds of other options for cheap(er) fun. Any singular entertainment product has a lot of substitutes and thus demand will be price elastic. In real terms, wages have stagnated since the 90's, with the price of essentials going up, making it so the average worker has less to spend on non-essentials. My theory on why Magic packs, and similar entertainment products, haven't tracked with inflation is due to the heavy competition in the sector for a shrinking pool of disposable income.
